Today was our first lesson with our wonderful co-op (minus one sweet girl who will be joining us soon)!
As soon as the girls arrived, we dressed them in traditional African women's dresses (kangas) with headwraps...they looked fabulous! There also was African music playing to set the mood...
We started out by reading Jan Brett's Honey... Honey... Lion book...about the African honey guide bird who leads the badger to honey. It takes place in Botswana so we learned where Botswana is on a map of Africa.
We also learned about Botswana's flag...the blue symbolizes water and the black and white stripes are for the zebra.
The setting of the book is on a savannah and introduces you to lots of different animals that live there. Jan Brett has wonderful resources on her website. All of these African animal illustrations came from there!
The girls picked out animals to color for our savannah mural.
Creating the mural...
Our African savannah...
We then read Lazy Lion and did a lion craft...
The girls ended the day with a little dress-up fun and a little dancing!
Our girls are definitely WILD ABOUT LEARNING!
My little "future home schoolers"...they love Africa too!

What a fun kick off to our unit, Shannon. Thanks so much. The girls had a blast. Your exotic African costumes were sure a hit!
ReplyDeleteShannon- you are so put together on this.....if I were still in Jax, I may have to join you! Even the babies have on zebra clothes- too cute! Job well done :) -Angie
