To celebrate the end of our first week of home schooling, we headed to "Africa" (at the Jax Zoo) for a real safari!
The little explorers were able to catch a glimpse of a lot of African animals we had been studying during the week...
the warthog (just like Pumba from Lion King)
a cheetah...the fastest animal on land.
Ostriches can't fly...but can run very fast!
An okapi... looks like a zebra, but more closely resembles a giraffe. (Taylor's favorite African animal. We got to see it running towards us, which was just thrilling for Taylor!)
Every zebra has its very own pattern of stripes...just like human fingerprints.
An African elephant or "tembo" in Swahili...African elephants' ears are shaped like the continent of Africa. Asian elephants' ears are much smaller.
The girls also recognized the Guinea Hen from their studies. Such smart girls!
The lion is called "simba" in Swahili....so clever that the Lion King creators used that name. We all knew Swahili and didn't even know it!
A little piece of Africa...right in our own backyard. It was surely hot enough to be a real safari!
We even learned that the little goats in the petting area are West African pygmy goats....too funny!
Such a fun way to bring their learning to life....the best part of home schooling.
