Summer is in full swing and it's Ladybug and Lemonade Day!
These are about Ladybug Girl by David Soman.
We love Eric Carle's The Grouchy Ladybug!

Our first graders are reviewing their skills with a few well-placed academic play-dates this summer.
Today we used a ladybug and lemonade theme to study double digit addition and subtraction and our spelling skills with the vowel sound combinations ou and ow, as well as oi and oy. Our literature focus was an Eric Carle favorite, the Grouchy Ladybug (notice the ou sound). We reviewed our time-telling and sequencing skills with this story. Then we acted out our own version with "puppets" gathered from the toy box. Their silly little dramas stressed the morale of the story: Bullies eventually get put in their place.

We played a game of ladybug and lemonade lotto using our math skills and finished the day with a ladybug and lemonade tea party. We baked chocolate tea cakes. The girls can do just about all of it themselves, now. They noticed that this recipe did not call for eggs, so the girls got to lick the beaters! We used a special pan with lots of cute buggy shapes. We made ladybugs, bumblebees, butterflies and dragonflies to go with our lemonade. The girls had fun pouring from a tiny ladybug teapot and sipping from tiny little cups!
Assignments included writing book reports on ladybug themed literature including Ladybug Girl by David Soman. We had plans to release real ladybugs in our garden today, but that will have to wait for another time, weather permitting.
