Getting Buggy...

We have spent the last few weeks studying insects...(when I actually feel like pulling our school stuff out and organizing a lesson!)  We seemed to focus mainly on ladybugs since they are the "friendliest" bug around, but also learned a little about dragonflies, moths, praying mantesis, beetles, etc.
One lesson that Taylor really enjoyed was "recreating" Eric Carle's articstic style. We used The Grouchy Ladybug artwork to discuss how he used different colors and texture for each part of the picture. Although Carle actually uses tissue paper, we decided to use paint. I think she did a great job recreating the ladybug!
I found some fun insect games online... http://www.playkidsgames.com/games/bugs/bugs.htm
Taylor enjoyed learning about the ladybug life cycle. We checked out lots of fiction and non-fiction books from the library and these helped her identify parts of the life cycle easier.
Egg, larva, pupa, ladybug!
Lots of insect worksheets on this site...
We also reviewed telling time with The Grouchy Ladybug and this ladybug clock .
Taylor also enjoyed watching The Very Quiet Cricket on YouTube or you can check out Eric Carle's movie that has The Very Hungry Caterpillar, The Very Quiet Cricket, and a few others. We were able to get it from the library.
There were so many more fun buggy projects and lots of learning we didn't get around to, but there's always next year! We're all 'buggied out" for now and are starting a unit on flowers this week, as long as these baby girls don't make their appearance!
